East Lake Duplex Conversion

This duplex, nestled in the on the rise East Lake area of Atlanta, was originally built in 1935. Over the years it served as a place that young families could start out in, as each side was approximately 800 square feet and consisted of a Kitchen, Bathroom, Family Room, and 2 Rooms. However, over the years as the area transitioned, so did this structure. So when an investor bought this property and contacted CS Design Group to re-imagine the space for 1 family, we jumped at the opportunity and went to work. The result... a stunning contemporary 3 Bedroom, 2 Bathroom home.

Prior to the redesign, the structure was in definite despair and lacked a clear architectural direction.

The side view of the home shows exactly how complex the roof was, as it had been added on to over the years.

The roof configuration and roof material were in need of some serious help. The years of neglect are on clear display here.

Prior to the redesign the space (seen here on the right side of the duplex) was sectioned off and dark.

Up in smoke... As you can see in this photo, much of the flooring material was not able to be salvaged. In addition, the windows, doors, and roof material all needed to be removed, as much of those items had rotted and decayed over the years.

The open kitchen is highlighted by the bartop that flows into the breakfast area.

Details, like high end tile in the secondary bathroom, help give this home a contemporary feel.

The after shot here reveals the new architectural theme, accentuated with the new front porch, tapered craftsman style columns, new windows with modified mullion patterns and board and batten shutters.

The after shot here shows how we put good use to the side entrance by adding a covered porch and deck with trellis above.

As you can see from the after shot here, part of the design strategy was to not only address the interior deficiencies, but to also address the exterior issues by cleaning up the roof lines.

The new design showcases a more open free-flowing layout.

The interior was completed gutted to make way for new framing, plumbing, electrical, drywall, and fixtures.

The large master shower, shown here, is just one of several great features in the new space.

Tapered columns with a brick base help emphasize the craftsman style theme that we went for.
